Corporate Social Responsibility at Whirlowdale

Whirlowdale is continuing to expand its partnership with HM Prison Service, with production units operating in the Midlands at HMP Dovegate and HMP Sudbury. This partnership forms a cornerstone of Whirlowdale’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which can be defined as how companies address the social, environmental and economic impacts of their operations, and so helps to meet our sustainable development goals. The long term aim of Whirlowdale has always been to assist HM Prison Service with the rehabilitation of prisoners and seek to employ ex-offenders.

For the past 18 months the Barton Under Needwood depot has been employing inmates from HMP Sudbury on day-release in sorting and production roles. All of the individuals concerned have come through Whirlowdale’s production facility inside of the prison, and this was viewed as the next stage of their rehabilitation.

In January of this year, following a successful day-release period, Whirlowdale employed a former resident of HMP Sudbury on a full time basis following the end of his sentence and he is now proving himself to be an invaluable member of the Whirlowdale team.

Managing Director, Andrew Pearce, commented “after many years of working with the Prison Service, and utilising their production facilities, it is good that we are able to give a little back by providing employment for individuals who may find it difficult to secure work on their release”.
